How can I maintain a healthy diet while eating out?

Some tips and strategies to make it easier to enjoy eating out without overindulging or making unhealthy choices are, checking out the menu ahead of time to choose healthier dishes and to avoid being influenced by others when at the table; many restaurants have their menu online to look at beforehand.

Choose dishes that are based around lean proteins such as chicken, tofu and seafood and fill up on vegetables, avoiding fattier cuts of meat such as belly pork, rump steak and ribs.

It is best to avoid foods that are battered and deep fried as these foods tend to absorb higher levels of unhealthier fats.

Choose a starter that is light and refreshing or opt for the grilled meat or fish starters that are higher in protein and ask for dressings and sauces to be served on the side to help control how much is consumed. Also, a starter could be shared, or half could be taken home to be enjoyed the next day.

Swap carb heavy side dishes for fresh veggies that contain vitamins, mineral and fibre.

Choose ice cream or fresh fruit salad for dessert and ask for two bowls and spoons; this will help to limit consuming too much sugar at the end of the meal, maybe have a coffee instead of a dessert. The anacronym BOSS may be a useful reminder to be mindful with dishes that contain Butter, Oil, Salt and Sugar.
