Can I eat carbohydrates and still have a healthy diet?

Yes. Carbohydrates are one of the three main food groups known as macronutrients that the body needs to function well. They are an important part of a healthy and wholesome diet and provide energy, vitamins, minerals and fibre.

Fibre is a type of carbohydrate that the body cannot digest, and it helps the digestive system to function properly.

There is a lot of confusion and misconceptions around carbohydrates; the belief that carbohydrates are unhealthy, fattening and an unnecessary part of a balanced diet is not true.

However, not all carbohydrates are healthy and nutritious. Refined or simple carbohydrates such as white bread, cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks, are low in fibre and digested and absorbed very quickly, often resulting in rapid spikes in blood sugar levels that can cause more hunger and cravings for food.

Conversely, wholegrain, complex carbohydrates such as brown rice, quinoa, barley, oats and wholegrain bread are high in fibre and digested much more slowly, helping to keep blood sugar levels more stable which helps to keep better control of appetite and weight.
